Ski Team Goes to China.
The US Freestyle Ski Team traveled to northern mainland China in March, 2003 for the first ever FIS sanctioned international ski competition in China. The event included two days of aereal freestyle competition by the US, Canadian and Chinese national teams. The event was a huge success for international sports and a world cup competition is planned for the same venue in 2004. Mt. Tam Orthopedics staff physician Dr. David Goltz traveled to China with the US team to provide medical coverage. In addition to the exciting on-snow action and cultural exchange, Dr. Goltz was able to interact and learn from his colleagues from the Chinese team and visit the medical center in Harbine, China.

Marin Football Season Closes.
Another season of high school football has drawn to a close, and the Mt. Tam Sports Medicine Center has continued its volunteer service to the schools.

Mt. Tam has covered Redwood's home varsity games with on-field physician for years. But, this year the service was expanded to include Redwood, Drake and San Rafael high schools with paramedic coverage for home JV games and paramedic and physician coverage for home varsity games. Thankfully, injuries were rare. Says long-time Redwood team physician, Dr. Charles Stuart: "Its nice to give something back to our community. We like to see a level of medical coverage for the high schools teams which is modeled on the level of care the pro's get."

Pre-season Physicals for High School Athletes to Continue for 2004!
Mt. Tam Orthopedics continued its tradition of providing free pre-participation screening physicals for Redwood High School athletes for 2003. The physicals were done at Redwood on a Saturday morning with Dr.'s Stuart, Keohane, Oechsel and Goltz volunteering their time. $20 was donated from each athlete for the booster club.

Mt. Tam plans to expand the pre-participation physicals program again for 2004, with Redwood, Drake and San Rafael to be included.

US Ski Team Injury - It's the Doctor!
US Ski Team doctor Dr. Jack Keohane traveled with the women's alpine team to Are, Sweden last March to cover a World Cup competition. One injury claimed the majority of the doctor's time: an on-snow shoulder dislocation. Unfortunately, it was Dr. Keohane's own shoulder!

Ever hard at work caring for the athletes, the doctor had a mishap with one of his skis pre-releasing resulting in a nasty dislocation and fracture. Unable to put the shoulder back in himself, he summoned the help of his Swedish colleagues and has made an otherwise uneventful recovery.

Tiburon Triathalon
Mt Tam Orthopedics sponsored the 2003 Tiburon triathalon on a beautiful sunny weekend this year. Amongst the 400 or so athletes was Mt Tam's own combined women's team made up of novice triatheletes Tonia Goltz and Vicki Strotz. Despite their inexperience, the ladies took first place in their category. Congratulations, ladies! No one had the heart to tell them they were the only ones in their category.
