A large magnetic coil allows digitized visualization of the interior of the body on a computer screen. MRI is especially useful for the diagnosis of soft
tissue injuries such as ligament tears, meniscal tears, cartilage damage, rotator cuff problems, disc hernations and spine disorders.
An MRI test takes about 45 minutes and does require a portion of the body to be placed inside the scanner. The test does not require sedation, is non-invasive
and there is no pain.
An MRI does not replace standard x-rays, and in many instances x-ray "plain films" add significantly to the value of MRI.
The Mt. Tam MRI facility utilizes an open MRI known as the GE Profile. The Profile is equipped to scan the pelvis, all extremities, shoulders, hips and the
spine. The Profile is located at the Mt. Tam Spine Center. MRI studies are sent over a secure internet connection to a radiologist. The scanner is also
networked to your Mt. Tam physicians' computer and can be reviewed shortly after completion. We have the additional capability of printing to film or paper.
